The Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works (MRDPW), in partnership with the beneficiaries – Ministry of Environment and Waters (MOEW) and Club “Economika 2000”, are currently in the process of implementation of project LIFE WatClima  “Bulgaria's Water Strategies for the Transition to a Climate Neutral and Sustainable Society”. The project is funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union and is to the amount of EUR 2 100 000.

The main objective of the project is to support Bulgaria’s preparation for the climate action challenges facing the water sector over the next decade. The shortage of drinking water and its quality as well as the floods and extreme meteorological events caused by climate change raise serious concerns for the water sector. This necessitates the application of new approaches to ensure transition towards to a climate-neutral and resilient society through planning and implementation of strategic decisions as well as through capacity building of the public and private stakeholders in the water sector.

The following main activities will be implemented within the framework of the project:

  • Elaboration of two long-term national strategies for the water sector, embedding the climate objectives into the policies for the water sector in Bulgaria and addressing the transition towards a climate-neutral and resilient society, as follows: a Strategy for Management and Development of Water Supply and Sewerage in Republic Bulgaria and a National Strategy for Management and Development of the Water Sector in Republic Bulgaria.
  • Pilot elaboration of Action Plans for transition towards climate neutrality in two WSS operators – Pernik and Haskovo, and implementation of demonstration small-scale investment measures from the elaborated plans;
  • Elaboration of methodological guidelines for development of the Action Plans for transition towards climate neutrality and climate change adaptation;
  • Training of employees of the WSS operators;

The implementation of the project should be completed by the beginning of December 2025.
